All Eyes on Astra Kelly

Can you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your musical journey and background?

Hi! I’m Astra Kelly. I’m a singer, songwriter, guitar player, vocal/songwriting coach, voice over talent, producer, and have enjoyed a long career as an independent artist. I’ve released ten albums on my own label. My first performance was in kindergarten as a singing littlest billy goat in the Billy Goats Gruff. I had music in my blood and there was never another path for me. I started writing songs as a pre-teen and joined my first band before I could drive. I chose to be an independent artist before indie was a thing. My style has been diverse, my commitment to the craft steadfast, and my message consistent. Life is meant for feeling, thinking, asking questions, truly living, facing fears, and seeking truth.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound and style?

When I was first finding my sound, it was Ani DiFranco for her edge and honesty. Stevie Nicks for her witchy wonder. Heart for their badassery and incredible vocal prowess. I always just wanted to sound like me, so I can’t really say there’s an album or artist that greatly influenced my actual sound.

What’s your creative process like when you’re composing or writing a new song?

It has changed over time. These days it’s simply listening to what the song wants, and essentially channeling it into existence. Of course, life experience and emotions are the foundation of that spark.

Among all the songs you’ve created, do you have a personal favorite? If so, what makes it special to you?

Today, I would say, “In the Time of Dying,” one of the singles off of my forthcoming full album release. Death is not a popular topic in music or in life. I never thought I could write about it. Witnessing the moment my Mom took her last breathe was one of the most sacred and profound experiences I’ve ever had. This song essentially wrote itself as if the spirits gathered to make it manifest.

Can you share the story or inspiration behind that particular song?

Let’s talk about your latest song. What’s the title, and what’s the story or message behind it?

“Soul Fires.” It’s the title track off of my forthcoming full album release of the same name. It’s about being healed through heartbreak and finally ready for the right someone to walk the journey of life with. I threw myself into the fires of fulltime RV living in 2022 and hit the road to process the events of the pandemic, the loss of my Mom to cancer, and to write a new record. I felt raw, and vulnerable, yet empowered by the journey. I said to myself, « no other broken heart could compare to this, so maybe now is the time for stitching up those old wounds once and for all.”

Share a memorable or unique experience from one of your live performances.

Any live performance where the audience is listening and open to the spirit and emotion of the music is memorable. Each experience is unique because it only happens once, with that particular audience, in that moment, and in that space. Those experiences are what keeps me going.

Beyond music, do you have any hobbies or interests that you’re passionate about? How do they influence your music?

I love doing voice over because it’s another way to use my voice. I am currently the voice of a rising social media star named Melvin. He’s a rescue cat. I get a lot of laughs out of that gig! I love to paint when I’m not feeling musical inspiration.

a. Is there a dream collaboration you’d like to pursue in the future?

I mean…writing and recording with Stevie Nicks would be an absolute dream! And then of course she’d take me on the road with her.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are just starting their journey in the music industry?

Practice, practice, practice your craft. Try not to judge yourself or your music too harshly. Collaborate and don’t be afraid to ask others for advice and guidance. Only a small percentage of aspiring musicians will be superstars. It’s not easy, but if you want a career as a creative, there is a whole middle class/working musician world that is available to all.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or new music you have in the works? What can your fans and listeners look forward to from you in the near future?

I’ll be releasing a couple more singles in the coming months and then the full album, “Soul Fires,” in the late spring/early summer. I’ll have some live video releases coming soon, and will be hopping in my RV, Bessie, for a mini Arizona tour in April.
