All Eyes on Jordyn Rayne

Can you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your musical journey and background?

My name is Jordyn Rayne and I am a 24 year old pop/punk singer-songwriter in Edmonton, Alberta. After graduating with a vocal performance diploma from Grant MacEwan University in 2022, I released my first full-length album “Time Capsule.” This was a compilation of songs about heartbreak, friendship, and life’s complications. It was a folk/pop album and my first attempt at songwriting/producing my own music. Following this release, I gathered up a four-piece band and we toured around Edmonton promoting these songs.Through performing with this band, I began to determine that the way I performed, and the genre of the songs from my first album, did not mesh. After riding the release of my first original album, I started to write more music that captured more of the sound I wanted to portray. Writing my second album « Lady, » to be released in spring 2024, I wanted to write more powerful songs that emulated who I am as a person now, and how I want to be seen as a performer. “Lady”: will serve as a perfect representation of my energy on stage and serves as my debut rock release

Musical Influences

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound and style?

When I wrote my upcoming album I took huge inspiration from Avril Lavigne for her pop/punk style and Miley Cyrus for her performance style. I grew up on female rock artists like Pat Benetar, Joan Jett and of course Stevie Nicks that have inspired who I am as a musician.

Can you share a specific artist or album that has had a significant impact on your music? I have been inspired by other female fronted bands such as Paramore, Halestorm and The Pretty Reckless.

Creative Process

What’s your creative process like when you’re composing or writing a new song? I usually start singing a melody in the car or in the shower and come up with words along with it. I then rush to my piano and start figuring out the chords that would work with the melody i’m singing.

Favorite Song

Among all the songs you’ve created, do you have a personal favorite? If so, what makes it special to you?

From my first album my favorite song is most definitely Nightly Thoughts. This song is so very personal to me and probably one of my most vulnerable songs I ever wrote. As for my new album, I love the title track “Lady” for what it stands for. It’s very much a woman empowerment song. I also love Babydoll. I’ve always had a hard time writing love songs because I always think they sound cheesy. However, the piano in this song mixed with the arrangement makes it not feel so cheesy.

Can you share the story or inspiration behind that particular song?

Nightly Thoughts was written when I was going through a very bad breakup that sent me on a depressive spiral. I was literally staying up every night with my anxious brain going 500 km/hr so one night I just decided to start writing all those thoughts down. My new album I made a pact to myself to not write a depressive breakup song (I had enough of those with my first album) so I wanted to write more songs about social issues we are facing in our day to day lives. That’s where “Lady” came from.

Latest Song

Let’s talk about your latest song. What’s the title, and what’s the story or message behind it? “Up in Lights” is all about the challenges of the music industry and rising past those challenges to come out on top. The music industry can be full of people who don’t have your best interests at heart and it’s all about pushing past the negativities they put on you. To me this song is me  coming into my own, embracing who I am as an artist and having the confidence for it to take me as far as it can go.

Live Performances

Share a memorable or unique experience from one of your live performances. Just this past August I had some girls show up to my show and they knew every single lyric to my song “Time of our Lives.” They sang it with me at the top of their lungs. That was a really cool moment and I thought “slow and steady you’re making your way up.”

Hobbies and Interests

Beyond music, do you have any hobbies or interests that you’re passionate about? How do they influence your music?

I am a manager in the day time and in school for human resources. Those skills have really helped me with managing my music career. I also figure skate every now and again. One day my instructor played my first album throughout the ice rink so the skaters could dance to the songs. That was another really cool moment.

Collaborations

Is there a dream collaboration you’d like to pursue in the future?

I mean the biggest dream would be to collab with Avril Lavigne as she is someone I closely relate to when it comes to how our music sounds.

Advice for Aspiring Musicians

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are just starting their journey in the music industry?

You got to give it your all. This isn’t something you just do half assed, you gotta dedicate a lot of time to it.

Upcoming Projects

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or new music you have in the works? What can your fans and listeners look forward to from you in the near future? My upcoming album will be released early May and believe me you won’t want to miss out! I will also be having an album release party on May 11th so watch out for more information on that!
