All Eyes on Nicollette Sullivan

Can you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your musical journey and background?

My name is Nicollette Sullivan. I have always enjoyed singing for as long as I can remember.

When I was little I was surrounded by music being around my father’s band. As I grew up I always found myself involved in music programs and theatre.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your sound and style?

Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Christina Aguilera, Sade, Nina Simone… are some of the artists that have helped guide me along my musical journey. I gravitated towards the authenticity in the emotional performances common in their music.

Can you share a specific artist or album that has had a significant impact on your music?

There was no specific album it was more of a collective of musical influences.

What’s your creative process like when you’re composing or writing a new song?

My creative process usually starts with myself and an instrumentalist just jamming together, no words, just a dance between voice and instrument. From there we will shape it into a song. I’ll write the words…… and the melody will shift along with the structure as the song takes shape as it develops.

Among all the songs you’ve created, do you have a personal favorite? If so, what makes it special to you?

I usually am never quite happy withe what I release to be honest. I’m very critical of my own
work. If I had to choose one, it would be between Tattered Wings and Angel Eyes. These are
both unreleased at the moment, but they are very personal and I get vulnerable lyrically.
They will be released this coming year.

Can you share the story or inspiration behind that particular song?

I’ll choose one, Angel Eyes. It’s about a woman who finds herself being drawn to someone she knows is not good for her, but she can’t seem to let go. In reality the song was written about two different people/relationships, but I combined them into one.

Let’s talk about your latest song. What’s the title, and what’s the story or message behind it?
I just released a cover of Santa Baby, originally sung but the iconic Earth Kitt. I had so much
fun with this song. I’m working on a bunch of new material to be released in 2024 so you will
have to get back to me on that one.

Share a memorable or unique experience from one of your live performances.
I basically have two different styles of live shows that I do. One is with a full band, those are usually exciting…..it’s fun getting to play with everyone. I also do acoustic shows, I enjoy them, particularly because of the intimacy.

Beyond music, do you have any hobbies or interests that you’re passionate about? How do they influence your music?

I love to dress up, thrifting, and have always had an interest in fashion and film. Both mediums inspire me and influence my music, storewide and visually. I get inspiration from every part of my life. Even just going to get drinks with my friends and the experiences we share there can lead to inspiration.

Is there a dream collaboration you’d like to pursue in the future?
I don’t know, I’ve never really thought about that, I’ll have to get back to you on that.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians who are just starting their journey in the
music industry?

Try not to let being perfect stop you from creating. Nothing is perfect. Just create and allow yourself the space to grow. There is beauty in imperfection.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or new music you have in the works? What can your fans and listeners look forward to from you in the near future?

I have been working on new music…..set to be released in 2024. I’m not sure if we are releasing 2 EP’s or a full album or both. My team and I are figuring it out. Either way get ready for a great 2024 of new Nicolette music!
